THE COMPANY
There was no convenient way to compare multiple destinations simultaneously. I designed a feature for Google Maps that implemented a seamless way to explore and compare nearby services.

IMPACT
A presentable case study.
I asked interviewees to find a mall and restaurant they would want to go to in the same day and observed their process. They searched “malls” and found a place. Then they cleared the search bar, which cleared the screen, and look up “restaurants”. After deciding on a restaurant, they could not remember which mall they wanted or where the mall was since the map moved to find restaurants.

Annoyance arose because the user had to do too much work - searching, re-searching, memorizing addresses. I wanted to create a feature that was intuitive and effortless to use.

Upon pressing the explore button in the bottom right, a wheel of different services appear. The user drags and spins the wheel in a natural circular motion to navigate the different services. The wheel changes sides based off the hand orientation of the user.
Rotating the wheel reveals a multitude of icons representing services such as coffee, hotels, restaurants, shopping, and more.

When the user selects a specific marker, the location’s information expands to reveal standard Google information. Now however, there is an extra “Pin” option that marks the location of the selected place. This pin remains while exploring unless unpinned. Pinning multiple locations allows users to visualize proximity to each other.
The user uses the navigation wheel to explore all the options for desired services and the pin function to compare specific, selected places.
